Tuesday, March 19 at 6PM: Waccamaw Library – Pawleys Island in South Carolina – 41 St. Paul Place

March 19 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

On Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m., the 2024 Friends of the Waccamaw Library (FOWL) Health & Wellness Series will come to a fitting end with a health presentation by author Martha Boone, M.D. Based on her decades of medical experience, Dr. Boone will provide inside information on an important health topic: how to best treat urologic symptoms and pain. Dr. Boone provided exemplary care for many years for her urology patients at Tulane University and in private practice. She will draw vital insights from her recent book, The Unfettered Urologist: What I Never Had Time to Tell You in a 15-Minute Office Visit. Her goal is to provide crucial information that she did not have time to share with patients within the narrow scope of an office visit, combining alternative treatments and conventional medicine to aid common urologic conditions. In dispensing this inside information, she hopes to help community members embrace healthier living, enabling them to save healthcare dollars for prevention and treatment or to more effectively utilize the healthcare system when professional medical treatment is needed. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Waccamaw Library, and is free and open to the public. The Library is located at 41 St. Paul Place, Pawleys Island, South Carolina 29585.

Dr. Martha Boone is one of the first 100 women board-certified in urology. After twenty-three years of education, she practiced academic urology for five years and worked in private practice for twenty-four years. She was named “Top Doc” in urology in Atlanta for over a decade. In addition to her successful medical career, Boone is an accomplished writer, publishing fiction and nonfiction works. Her first novel, The Big Free, fictionalizes her first six months at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and a sequel, titled Mother Charity, will be released in March 2024. Her current nonfiction book, The Unfettered Urologist, explains the pearls of wisdom she never had time to include in a short office visit. The book, which skillfully combines quality medical information with engaging stories about typical urological issues, has inspired praise from a wide number of urology experts as well as general readers. Dr. Raju Thomas, President of the American Urological Association and Chair of Urology at Tulane University Medical School, hails The Unfettered Urologist as “a must read for patients and doctors alike” as Dr. Boone shares “her insight into common urology problems with the great integrity I’ve witnessed for 35 years.” Dr. Meera S. Garcia, Chief Medical Officer at Advantia Health, calls The Unfettered Urologist “a medical memoir filled with reminiscences, worldly wisdom, and empiric knowledge providing insight into the ever-changing field of urology. Dr. Boone is an incredibly gifted physician and surgeon, and a gifted writer as well!” Now retired, Dr. Boone writes full-time and travels with her husband.

Mother Charity was a joy to read. It was so well written and brought back many warm memories for me of life in New Orleans. You did such a wonderful job of touching on so many things that make the city and region so unique and bringing the culture and characters to life on the page. Your depiction of Leeodus rivals Toole’s Ignatius J. Reilly.  Congratulations on your entertaining novel/memoir! – Jane

“The Unfettered Urologist” by Martha B. Boone M.D. dives into the surprising connection between excess body fat, particularly belly fat, and a decrease in male sexual health and performance. The science behind it? Elevated estrogen levels caused by extra weight, which Martha explains effectively, can lead to lower testosterone. This, in turn, impacts muscle tone and, most importantly for me, hinders sexual performance. That revelation was the wake-up call I needed to finally prioritize weight loss.

While the sex-related impact was my personal motivator, the book offers a wealth of valuable information beyond that specific topic. If you’re looking for a fresh perspective on sexual and overall health and a science-backed nudge in the right direction, “The Unfettered Urologist” is definitely worth a read.

As a Louisiana native, I loved reading about Elizabeth’s daily challenges while honing her surgical skills and relationships at Charity Hospital. The setting was accurate and immersive, the characters quirky and colorful, and it had me craving a big shrimp po-boy! Boone’s writing grabbed me from the first page, and I enjoyed the book immensely! I highly recommend. I was provided an early copy of this book, Mother Charity, by the publisher for review.
